Its simplicity in laying out plot levels to Patrick Rothfuss’s The Name of Wind. (I have given the kingkiller chronicle 5-star rating not because of its variety of story mixing or length of mini story integration but Simplicity of intervene stories. It’s just my inclination towards justification of simplicity to the available plot. )To me, Pannalal Patel showed his worth through this work alone. I read this book twenty years back and since than I have not found any other Gujarati novel that I can compare with it.

Ok i admit, i am not willing to believe all that is written, including the mother and the child incidence, what the leading character sees.won't be a spoiler and say what it was exactly, but if you read it you'll know.but i believe in human endurance. And the goodness even in the baddest of times. I read it when i was quite small, and it was so powerful that i have not been able to forget it ever.nor will be. His father died during his childhood and his mother Hiraba raised the children.His education progressed with many difficulty due to poverty. He could study up to the only fourth standard at Sir Pratap High School, Idar. During school days, he befriended his schoolmate Umashankar Joshi. For a brief period, he worked as a manager in a liquor manufacturing company in Dungarpur. He wrote his first novel while working as a domestic help in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.In 1936, he accidentally met his old friend Umashankar Joshi who persuaded him to write. He wrote his first short story Sheth Ni Sharda (1936). Later, his stories published in many Gujarati magazines.
In 1940, he received recognition for his first novel Valamana (The Send-off), followed by Malela Jeev (1941), Manvini Bhavai (1947) and many other novels. In 1971, he started a publishing company Sadhana in Ahmedabad along with his two sons. During the later years, he mostly wrote novels based on Hindu mythology and epics.He died on 6 April 1989 in Ahmedabad following brain hemorrhage.

They were unable to marry due to coming from different castes. Kanji also has the social responsibility of his elder brother's family. But he finds it difficult to live without Jivi.
His friend Hiro suggests having Jivi marry Dhula, the barber in their own village. After a great psychological struggle, Kanji agrees with Hira and get Jivi married to Dhula. But his plan does not bring the expected result. Dhula's suspicious nature, his tyranny, and his poor treatment of Jivi causes Kanji's plan to be unsuccessful. Kanji's God-fearing nature and his indecisive mental state also play a role in his failure. Kanji moves from the village to the city to keep himself away from Jivi. Jivi, meanwhile, is tired of the daily quarrels and beatings and tries to commit suicide.
But, by mistake, her tyrannical husband Dhulo loses his life and she falls into an emotional imbalance, yearning for her beloved Kanji. In the end Kanji's worldly love transformed into a spiritual love, and so he comes from the city to be with Jivi.
Reception The books was well received by readers and critics. Meghani had written, 'It is not only the story of Kanji and Jivi but also the story of all of us. It is the sensitive story of the entire society. And herein lies the aesthetic beauty of this novel.'

Ulajhan directed by N. Acharya was the first Gujarati film adaptation of the novel. Malela Jeev (1956) is a directed by Manhar Raskapur.
